Deux Chevaux: performance artist to take to London's streets in novel vehicle

Performance: London artist William Mackrell, 31, of Finsbury Park

It is a visual joke for those with a smattering of French.

Two horses will this weekend pull a Citroen 2CV - known as a Deux Chevaux (two horses) - from Hyde Park through Kensington and Chelsea to Knightsbridge.

The performance is the brainchild of London artist William Mackrell, 31, of Finsbury Park, who has chosen to drive his novel vehicle past the great museums of south Kensington as an appropriate route for a work that explores “the crossover between art, nature and science as a site-specific intervention”.

Institutions such as the Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Royal Albert Hall were established in the area that came to be known as Albertopolis because it was the brainchild of Prince Albert and created with funds raised from the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park.

Mackrell said: “The work challenges the interaction of natural and mechanical power, questioning the limits of language to measure their differences and similarities whilst confronted with the unexpected in the everyday.”

The performance will start opposite the Serpentine Sackler Galelry at 11.30am and conclude at the Andipa Gallery at 5.30pm this Saturday. www.williammackrell.com
