This is the dramatic moment a lifeboat crew rescued a dog who fell into the Thames and the Good Samaritan who jumped into save him.

When the RNLI boat was called just before 8pm on Sunday, they found ta barefoot man balancing on a chain by the river wall, clutching the drenched dog in his hands.

Dramatic footage shows the crew pluck both of them to safety before helping them back up on the embankment.

As the dog is passed back to his grateful owner, he runs over to thank both the man and the crew who saved him.

The man had dived in to stop the dog drowning but was left clinging to a chain

He tells them: “Thank you very much. That was insane.

“He just literally ran along the pavement and just jumped straight over without a second breath.”

The RNLI's Tower Lifeboat station, based in central London, said it was called at around 7.49pm on Sunday to reports of a dog in the river near to St Thomas's Hospital.

A spokesman said that as the lifeboat neared Westminster Bridge they were told a member of the public had entered the water to try to save the dog.

"The lifeboat arrived on scene with the Marine Police 2 and could see a male stood on the rescue chains attached to the embankment wall," the spokesman said.

"He was stood just above the waterline with the dog in his hands."

During the rescue the lifeboat was positioned against the embankment wall so the dog and the man could be taken aboard.
