Andy Murray's sweatband ended up in the hands of the Duchess of Cornwall following his second round victory at Wimbledon on Thursday.

Britain's top tennis star, celebrating his straight sets win over Robin Haase, had thrown his wristband towards Camilla as she sat in the stands of Number One court.

It was caught by All England Club chairman Philip Brook, who then passed it to Camilla - apparently a big Rafael Nadal fan.

Murray later said the Duchess had shown him the sweatband in her bag and a royal source confirmed she was "delighted" with her memento.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said the Duchess and Murray met after his win so she could "pass on her congratulations".

And in a tweet to the tennis player later, Clarence House said: "Thank you for your wrist band Andy!"

Conditions at the All England Club were cooler than on Wednesday when Wimbledon recorded its hottest ever day, as the mercury soared to 35.7C (96F).

James Ward joined fellow Britons Murray and Heather Watson in the third round. The 28-year-old wildcard banked £77,000 by beating Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in four sets.

Two-time champion Nadal made a shock exit from the competition after being defeated by German Dustin Brown.
