East Croydon: Police and ambulance vehicles outside the station
Tom Marshall24 December 2015

Police are investigating after a dead body was found on train tracks in south London.

The body of a man was found just outside East Croydon station shortly after 9am on Christmas Eve.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the death was being treated as “unexplained” and it was “too early to tell” if the person had been hit by a train.

However, their injuries were said to be consistent with being hit by a train.

Emergency: London's air ambulance landed nearby

He added: “We were called to a body on the tracks at 9.11am.

"BTP is currently in attendance with colleagues from London Ambulance Service, and a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the person and establish how they came to be on the tracks and receive their injuries."

The man's age was not immediately known.

Bystanders reported a large police and ambulance presence at the station, while London's air ambulance landed nearby.

The death is causing significant delays to Southern Trains services of up to an hour with disruption expected to continue until the afternoon.

An LAS spokeswoman said: "We were called at 9.06am to reports of a person being hit by a train at East Croydon station.

"Our crew arrived within six minutes. We sent an ambulance vehicle, an Incident Response Officer and HEMS.

"Our crew remain on scene."
