Family 'shocked' by prank call nurse death

9 December 2012

The family of a nurse believed to have taken her own life after falling victim to a hoax call are being comforted by family and friends today.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was duped by two Australian DJs - who impersonated the Queen and the Prince of Wales - into putting through a call to the Duchess of Cambridge's nurse at King Edward VII's Hospital in London.

The devoted nurse and mother-of-two was pronounced dead at an address close to the hospital yesterday.

Relatives and friends rallied round to comfort her partner Benedict Barboza, 49, and the couple's teenage son and daughter, aged 14 and 16.

All three were at the family's terrace home at Greystoke Avenue, Southmead, Bristol, today struggling to come to terms with the tragic death.

A friend at the address said the family was "very, very shocked and unhappy at the tragedy".

He said they were together at home with other family members who were comforting them.

A single bouquet wrapped in pink paper, propped up against iron gates at the house, is the only outward sign of yesterday's tragic events.

Neighbours have kept a respectful distance and left the family to mourn their loss in private.

Some paid tribute to the nurse they described as a "lovely, lovely person."

Others questioned whether there may have been more pressing concerns, unknown as yet, on the mind of the nurse.

All are angry with the Sydney-based DJs whose hoax call appears to have triggered yesterday's events.
