Firefighters were called out to west London this morning to help free a fox that had its head stuck in a watering can.

A woman living in Milton Road in East Sheen came across the animal after hearing repeated banging noises from outside her window.

After looking around, she found the fox wandering up and down the street with the plastic container wedged tightly over its head.

Watch Manager Ben Midgley explained: “When we arrived the fox was wrapped in a towel and sleeping on the caller’s lap.

"It was very calm and we carefully cut the plastic to release its head. The fox was uninjured and we released it."

Despite freeing the animal, the London Fire Brigade has urged people to call the RSPA rather than emergency services if they come across an animal in trouble.

A spokesman said: "We will always be there in an emergency, but not all animal rescues need our help."

The warning comes after a fox was freed from a building site yesterday and a recent callout for police after a woman found one of the animals lying on her bed.
