A Londoner has been nominated for a Bollywood music prize after Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman tipped him for the top.

Former PC World shop assistant Ash King will fly to Mumbai today to attend the Stardust awards, a ceremony attended by Bollywood's biggest stars, where he is nominated for best newcomer.

Rahman, who won an Academy Award for the score of Slumdog Millionaire, invited King, of Southall, to his London home after friends sang his praises. He was so impressed with the 25-year-old's voice, he flew him to Chennai to record in his private studio.

King had two number ones in India last year and has sung on the soundtrack of six Bollywood films. Lady Gaga also used his vocals on a remix of her song Just Dance.

He said: "Music has always run in my family. My father used to perform with Ravi Shankar in India back in the Sixties and my sister and I recall George Harrison coming to our house at Wembley when we were very young as he was into Indian classical music."
