Ten people fled to safety from an east London block of flats after a fire tore through one of the properties today.

Part of the roof of the building at Myrtle Road in Harold Hill near Romford was burned through by the fire as shocked residents evacuated the building.

A further 20 people in neighbouring properties had to be led to safety as fire crews battled the flames for around two hours.

It took 58 fire fighters with eight engines to eventually bring the blaze under control.

Residents also reported seeing carloads of police and paramedics arriving at the incident as a precautionary measure.

An image from the scene showed smoke still billowing from a hole in the roof as emergency workers looked on this afternoon.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said they had been called to the block just before 11am this morning and had the fire under control by 1pm.

He said: "The whole of a flat on the second floor was damaged by the blaze. Part of the roof was also destroyed."
