A police investigation has been launched after human remains were found under family home in south London.

Officers were called just after 3pm yesterday to Foxley Lane in Purley, nears the junction with Furze Lane and The Bridle Road, and found what was believed to be a human skull.

The skull was reportedly discovered as the family living at the house were replacing the driveway.

The remains will be assessed and officers will be seeking assistance from specialists.

A police cordon is currently in place around the area.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "At this stage this is being treated as unexplained and officers retain an open mind in regards to the circumstances.

"Detectives from Croydon CID are investigating."
