Read what the fans had to say after watching Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to claim his historic Wimbledon title.

Hayley Collis, 24, works for Vodafone, Newbury, It was amazing. We were there from 10am to get our spot on Henman Hill. We sat at the back and it was like a little community - it was heaving. I’ve never jumped up and cheered as much in my life. I had a big cry at the end it was just crazy.

Hannah Browne, 29, PE teacher, Liverpool, It was absolutely amazing. We had tickets to Court One, but weren’t going to miss this. The atmosphere was just unbelievable on the hill. I just cried at the end, we were watching history. The pressure is off him now and he can just enjoy his tennis for a long time ahead.

Hannah Evans, 22, works in telecoms, Berkshire, We only decided to come up last night while eating takeaway. We went and bought an £11 tent and started queuing at 2am in the morning. I am so glad we did. I can’t believe I was there at the end it’s the most tense I have ever been. The noise at the end was just huge.

Georgina Morris, 28, design teacher, Liverpool, I’m not that much of a tennis fan. I just totally got caught up in the spirit of it and I’ve been in awe all day, just walking around with my gob open. I can’t believe how many people packed onto the hill. To be part of something 77 years in the making is amazing. I’ll be able to tell everyone – my grandchildren – I was there.

George Oates, 24, hospitality, Victoria, It was absolutely fantastic, but pretty nerve-wracking. The crowd all stood up when he went40-0 up, so we were stood up for a while. It went absolutely mental when he won and we popped the champagne. We managed to get a few sips in, but most of it went on the floor.

Neil Parker, 30, sales, Reading, It was incredible, the last game especially. During the rest of the set everyone had been told to sit down and the stewards were quite on top of it, but they let it go at the end. I had Court One tickets so I popped in at the end to see (Martina) Hingis and (Martina) Navratilova, but it would have gone against everything to miss the Murray match.

Stacey Dow, 27, fashion PR, Shoreditch, The atmosphere on the hill was very tense and the crowd was with him all the way. Managing to come back from two breaks down in the second set and when he won the last game it was head-in-hands stuff.

Sophie Gildersleeve, 27, works for a charity, Wandsworth Town, Everyone went absolutely mental when he won, but everyone was pretty relieved at the same time. It was (Tim) Henman now it’s Murray. He’s grown up a bit and he has been waiting so long to do it so next year he’ll be able to enjoy it a lot more.

Anna Cullen, 28, PA, Shoreditch, People have been really harsh on him and he gets such a bad press, but I liked him from day one. He comes across as a bit grumpy – I think it’s the non-smiling thing – but he just focuses on his tennis. Now he has won hopefully everyone will finally like him.

Mark Brown, 40, works in media, Holborn, When Murray started to pull away people started to believe. The last game was a real up and downer. When he lost those three match points everyone thought this is going to go on for another three and a half hours. It was pretty emotional at the end.

Melanie Evans, 38, production manager, Stratford, It was so exciting to be there on Centre Court, my boyfriend and I kept turning to each other gloating and this was my first time. It was absolutely brilliant, a great experience. I’m a tennis convert now.

Sarah Sapper, 47, works in TV, Finsbury Park, I have been watching tennis since 1981 and I just never thought I would see this day. At the end I burst into tears and I’m still crying. From eight years ago to where he is now, I just kept thinking he was going to get beaten because (Novak) Djokovic is such a great comeback artist.
