Security fears: Lambeth Council's offices in Brixton

A council is reviewing its security measures because of a “hardcore mob” who have been regularly abusing and intimidating officials.

Officials at Lambeth are considering using more security guards and making people apply to attend meetings because of fears councillors may get attacked by angry demonstrators.

Council leader Lib Peck said: “It is a very sad state of affairs when public servants are abused simply for doing their job.

“Most people coming to public meetings do so to engage and debate peacefully. However a small hardcore mob seem intent on disruptive, aggressive behaviour and it simply will not be tolerated.”

The latest incident saw police being called to escort councillors from a meeting which had been targeted by protesters opposed to plans to redevelop Brixton’s historic railway arches. Officers entered the council meeting hall amid chaotic scenes on Tuesday after campaigners forced their way inside and “glitter-bombed” the officials.

Others hurled plastic googly eyes at the panel and chanted: “We’re watching you.”

Committee members were escorted through a back door of the council’s temporary base at the Karibu centre, opposite Brixton Academy, as the 50 activists were ushered outside.

The councillors and officials also faced harassment on their journey home, it emerged today. “One planning officer was followed onto a bus, heckled and subsequently had to disembark and get a taxi home,” a spokesman said.

Lambeth’s Democratic Services team will review arrangements for future public council meetings, which are currently being held in various locations across the borough as the town hall is closed for refurbishment.
