Armed police swarmed on a busy City market following reports of a suspicious package.

Leadenhall Market, near Tower HIll, was shut while officers investigated.

City of London Police were advising people to avoid the area as it was closed off following the reports at about 1.40pm on Tuesday.

Officers later said the package was found not to be suspicious and the market was reopened at 2.20pm.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “We can confirm an incident involving a item found at Leadenhall Market has now been resolved."

“Cordons have been now been lifted and officers will help facilitate the return of traders to the market.”
