Locals fight on as Shepherd’s Bush Market revamp given go-ahead

Proposals to regenerate Shepherd’s Bush Market have been given the green light after a second bid to halt them was rejected.

Developer Orion plans to demolish 13 shops in Goldhawk Road, including a 100-year-old pie and mash restaurant frequented by David Beckham, and build more than 200 homes.

The £150 million project was held up when traders accused Hammersmith and Fulham council of not following proper procedures.

A judicial review last year upheld the complaint, but the local authority approved the application for a second time after abiding by the rules.

A second review was dismissed at the High Court last week.

Council leader Nicholas Botterill called the outcome a “victory for common sense” and added: “We can now get on with the important work of breathing new life into the market so that future generations can enjoy a vibrant and thriving shopping destination to rival the best in London.

“The offer of new premises remains firmly on the table for businesses wishing to stay in this location and I hope they will now look carefully at the benefits of participating in this scheme.”

Orien has also agreed rent protection measures during the works period to traders and a £500,000 fund to compensate them during construction.

Thirteen shops and 140 stallholders have been issued with Compulsory Purchase Orders but an inquiry is currently considering whether these were fairly implemented.

Labour MP for Hammersmith Andy Slaughter said: “It was clear during the recent CPO inquiry that residents, traders and the Goldhawk Road shops are completely opposed to this.

“Two hundred people registered formal objections and not one person apart from the council and the developer spoke out in favour — that’s unprecedented. It shows this scheme has no support. I’m still confident we will be able to defeat it if not through the courts then through the ballot box.”

The project will see the market widened to provide more space for larger pitches. There will also be more stalls, new seating areas and toilets and at the Uxbridge Road end a public square will provide the setting for the refurbished Bush Theatre.
