Bus drivers in London are set to go on strike on Thursday - the first of three walkouts planned this month.

Transport for London said the latest strike, which will run from 4am on Thursday until Friday morning, would result in bus services being "significantly disrupted" in the capital.

Unions have described industrial action as a "last resort" as they call on the city's 18 bus operators to pay drivers equal rates.

Drivers' pay currently differs by as much as £3 per hour depending on the company they work for.

Workers went on strike over the same issue last month, causing disruption for millions of commuters.

Wayne King, Unite regional officer, said: "We urge London’s bus operators to see sense and collectively engage in talks to give London’s bus workers a fair deal."

But TfL has insisted that increasing wages for some drivers would cost about £100million a year, resulting in cuts to services or an increase in fares.

Mike Weston, Transport for London's director of buses, said: “London has one of the best and most extensive bus networks anywhere in the world.

"It would be much better if the leadership of Unite actually worked with the bus companies to ensure that it remains that way rather than disrupting bus passengers.”

The bus companies which face being affected by the strike include; Abellio (Abellio London and Abellio West London); Arriva (Arriva North and Arriva South); CT Plus (Hackney Community Transport); Go Ahead (Blue Triangle, Docklands, London General, London Central, Metrobus); London Sovereign, London United, Metroline (Metroline and Metroline West); Stagecoach (East London Bus & Coach Company, Selkent) and Tower Transit.

Commuters with bus and tram pass season tickets are being advised to use Tube, London Overground and DLR services.

Two further strikes are being planned for February 13 and 16.
