A London comedian today claimed Eddie Izzard banned her from sharing pictures of him interrupting her show to take the stage at Edinburgh Festival.

Transgender performer Sarah Franken alleged Izzard, who regularly appears in shows as a transvestite, joined her on stage on Sunday and apparently spent about five minutes "bantering" with the fellow comedian before leaving the venue in the middle of her set.

A little later, a mutual friend of the two stand-up acts texted to ask Izzard whether he minded Franken sharing pictures of their encounter on social media.

But Franken, who lives in Bethnal Green, said he refused permission, apparently over concerns the pictures showed them in a bad light.

In a post on Facebook, she wrote: "Eddie Izzard came onto my stage during my showtime last Sunday in front of my modest audience of 19 people, bantered with me for five minutes and f***ed off somewhere else.

"Afterwards he refused permission for photos of the event to be shared but I was allowed to say 'that I had met him'.

"His support of trans performers is to take their stage uninvited, banter with them for five minutes, f*** off and then refuse permission for any photos of the event to be made public?"

Later Franken told the Standard she felt "patronised" by the incident.

"I've had other celebrities come on stage with me before and they've seen the show and then told others to see the show," she added.

"It was just a different level of audacity. I don't think I would have minded if my friend had said 'Eddie Izzard is waiting for you backstage'.

"But he came on stage, and then he said I couldn't use the photos."

The 42-year-old comedian, whose Fringe show Who Keeps Making All These People ends on Sunday, went on: "I was excited at first. Then I was confused because I was wondering who's right, who's wrong.

"I've got £100 to my name, and he's playing Wembley."

Representatives for Mr Izzard have been contacted for comment.
