London is poised to get what has been described as the world’s first vegan fried chicken takeaway in the new year.

Street food company Temple of Seitan told the Standard the outlet would be opening in the Hackney Central area, but have not revealed more details on its exact location.

The restaurant will serve tubs of fried chicken-style food alongside sandwiches when it opens in January.

But instead of being made from actual chicken, the produce is formed from seitan a wheat-gluten meat substitute.

Staff at the company said they wanted to make the product because fried chicken was one of their favourite foods before they went vegan.

They hope that fans of the fried snack may even change their minds about vegan food after tasting it.

Rebecca McGuinness from Temple of Seitan told blog Fat Gay Vegan: “In January 2017, we’ll be opening London’s (and maybe the world’s!) 1st 100 per cent vegan chicken shop.

“We’re looking forward to providing a vegan alternative for Londoners craving a bit of takeaway.”

She told the Standard: “The menu will feature the usual chicken shop fare such as burgers, tender strips, popcorn chicken as well as sides such as coleslaw and mac ‘n’ cheese.”
