Londoners are more likely than anyone else in the country to give Champagne as a festive gift, it has been revealed.

Those living in the capital are twice as likely to pop a bottle of fancy fizz under the Christmas tree.

Research by supermarket giant Sainsbury’s also found that 58 per cent of the store’s sparkling wine magnum sales take place in November and December.

While one in four festive revellers enjoy a glass of fizz on Christmas morning.

Despite the capital’s taste for Champagne, Prosecco is the nation’s favourite tipple, making up 57 per cent of sparkling wine sales, according to Sainsbury’s Christmas drinks report.

Last year, shoppers spent almost £9 million on the Italian booze drink in the week leading up to the big day.

The supermarket has also predicted that some 500,000 bottles of Prosecco, Champagne and other sparkling wines will be bought on December 23 – dubbed fizz Friday.

Emma Monaghan, Sainsbury’s buyer for Champagne and sparkling wine said: “The ever increasing popularity of Prosecco has created a real interest in exploring less familiar sparkling alternatives and has opened up the category.”
