Residents were evacuated from a luxury block of flats by the River Thames last night after a fire broke out in a third floor apartment.

About 12 people were forced to flee the building after the blaze was sparked at the Parliament View Apartments on Albert Embankment, where a two-bedroom flat costs £695,000.

The road was closed at Lambeth Bridge while fire crews tackled the flames, which caused about 40 per cent damage to the apartment.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said about 20 firefighters and four fire engines were called to the block at 8.20pm.

He said: "We got there very quickly as the fire station is just around the corner."

Pictures posted by witnesses on Twitter showed fire crews working at the scene using an aerial ladder.

No injuries were reported and the fire was under control within an hour, the LFB said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
