Two women were killed and a girl aged 10 left fighting for life in hospital after an HGV crash on the M25.

The accident happened at 11.20pm last night near Waltham Abbey when the lorry and an Audi car collided.

Essex police said a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is being held in custody.

The two women were pronounced dead at the scene while the 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital.

The lorry ended up on its side after the collision, down a bank at the side of the motorway between junctions 26 and 27 on the anti-clockwise carriageway.

The carriageway was closed until the start of this morning’s rush hour, causing tailbacks of several miles, before the lorry was removed.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Our sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones in this tragic incident.

“We have been and will continue to fully support Essex police in their investigations into the collision. Given these investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate for us to comment at this stage on the cause.”

Essex police said inquiries were being led by its serious collision investigation unit. Witnesses are asked to call 101 or email collision appeal@essex.pnn.police.uk
