A man who vandalised the RAF Bomber Command War Memorial has been detained under the mental health act, police said.

Andrew Patterson, 31, of no fixed address, admitted 94 offences of criminal damage and going equipped for theft and criminal damage between May and June last year.

Southwark Crown Court heard Patterson targeted the memorial in Green Park, central London, a week after Fusilier Lee Rigby was killed IN 2013.

He was also charged with criminal damage of the Animals in War Memorial in Hyde Park, which pays tribute to animals who served for the British forces.

On another occasion he stole and wrecked criminal damage to the Australian war memorial Rising Sun, in Hyde Park, between May 17 and 20 last year.

Police launched an investigation to trace the culprit of the vandalism, gathering evidence from witnesses, victims and CCTV footage.

Patterson was arrested on February 12 and subsequently charged on March 25.

Detective Sergeant Pete Merrit, Westminster CID, said: "I would like to thank all partner agencies who have helped to prevent further criminal offences being perpetrated by Andrew Patterson."
