A man has suffered 'life-changing injuries' after being hit by a bus in south London this morning.

The pedestrian was hit in George Street, Croydon, just before 10.15am and passers-by rushed to help while emergency services were scrambled to the scene.

Among those who rushed to the man's aid were three staff members from Croydon College.

Eddie McCourt, client care manager at the college, told the Standard: "Me and my colleague Donna Piercey were informed someone had been knocked down so we grabbed the first aid kit and ran out.

"I think because we had the first aid kit people took a step back and we did first aid on the young guy.

"He had been hit quite severely around the head and shoulders and was bleeding quite a lot. We had to clear the blood and his airways."

Mr McCourt said the man, who is in his 20s, was not conscious while they were treating him but began to regain consciousness when paramedics arrived.

But Mr McCourt has not accepted praise for his actions, adding it was "just something we would do for anybody".

He added: "They don't have to come to the college. We were there and wanted to help."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said they sent an ambulance crew, a duty officer and London's Air Ambulance to the scene.

He added: "We treated a man reported to be in his 20s who was taken as a priority to St George's Hospital, Tooting, by road ambulance, escorted by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance."

The extent of the man's injuries are currently unknown but are believed to be 'life-changing'.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman said the bus stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made.
