A man who found a massive diamond ring outside Nando’s has returned it to its “distraught” owner after launching a Facebook campaign to find her.

Andy Samuels spotted the gleaming piece of jewellery lying in the road outside the chicken chain in Earl’s Court, west London, after a night out drinking in the early hours of Sunday.

The huge diamond in the centre is estimated to be two carats in size, with several smaller stones around it, and the 31-year-old said he felt “a bit like Gollum at the time, revelling in my marvellous find”.

But rather than “flogging [the ring] at Cash Converters”, Mr Samuels decided he “had better do the honourable thing” and promptly launched a Facebook campaign to track down its owner.

Now Mr Samuels has praised the power of social after the campaign proved a success and led to a “fairytale ending”.

He revealed that the owner was an older woman and that his Facebook appeal had reached her within hours of his posting it.

He told the Daily Mail: “It’s a fairytale ending and shows just how much good social media can do. I feel like I have done my good deed for the year.”

Mr Samuels added that he met the woman at a jeweller’s, where staff verified her insurance records.

He said: "She was overjoyed because she had been upset and doesn’t want any attention, but she was very, very pleased to have it back."
