A man's body was recovered from Hackney Wick Canal this morning.

Police were called to the river - also known as the River Lee Navigation - near Wallis Road at 11am on Wednesday after reports a body had been found.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman said the body of a man was recovered from the water a short time later.

A witness told the Standard they saw police at the bridge at White Post Lane, next to Crate Brewery at lunchtime.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the man's identity and the full circumstances of the death

Officers from Tower Hamlets are investigating, a Met spokesman said.
