My blind date from hell: caller tells how online flirt turned out to be her boss

After weeks of flirting with a man on an internet dating site, a woman kept a date to meet him at a London bistro — and came face to face with her boss.

The horror on both sides was such that the pair agreed never to mention it again, but Zoe (as she calls herself) was so appalled she quit her job. Zoe told her story to Capital Radio presenters Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon on the breakfast show.

She said: “I was fed up with being single so I thought, I’m going online, how wrong can it go? I met this guy online, we were chatting on email for almost a month and then he organised for us to meet up. He didn’t have a profile picture up, but I thought, oh well, the flirting’s there, the banter’s there.

“I went to a bistro he’d organised for lunch. I walked in and saw my boss sitting there and he said, ‘Oh, hi Zoe’, and he seemed a bit shaken. He said, ‘I’m here for a meeting’, and I said, ‘So am I, I’m meeting a client’. I sat at an opposite table and was waiting for five, 10, 15 minutes.” She dialled the number her date had given her to check he was coming, but to their mutual horror, her boss, sitting nearby, answered the call on his phone.

Zoe, who is set to marry next year, said: “I had already finished my wine, thankfully, because I was so nervous. After five seconds it was literally, ‘Don’t say anything’ — ‘Okay, neither do you’ and we both sort of ran out.”

Dating websites today predicted their busiest day will be January 2, after festive celebrations are over. About six million people in the UK used dating websites between last Christmas and new year.
