New Year's tragedy on London railways after two found dead and man left fighting for his life

Two people were hit by trains in London on New Year’s Day and a third body was found on the track.

A man and another person, thought to be a young woman, were declared dead while another man is fighting for his life in hospital on a tragic morning across the capital's railways.

British Transport Police officers were called to Clapham North Tube station at 3.22am after reports a person, thought to be woman in her 20s, was hit by a train.

Paramedics were also sent to the underground station but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the victim’s next of kin have been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Shortly before 5am, officers were then called to Hayes & Harlington station after a man was also struck by a train.

He was treated by medics at the scene for life-threatening injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Police said they are in the process of contacting his family.

At 8.30am, BTP were called to a stretch of track about half a mile from London Paddington station after a passing train driver spotted a body on the line.

Paramedics were called to the scene but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

BTP said an investigation has been launched to establish how the man came to be on the tracks and described his death as “unexplained”.
