Parking wardens in Hackney who threatened to go on strike over pay called off their walkout after they were offered the London Living Wage.

The 30 wardens, who had planned to take industrial action for five days this week, decided to accept the new offer from employer APCOA Parking after previously rejecting a 1.5 per cent pay increase.

The council-hired contractor will now pay the borough's 50 wardens £9.15 per hour.

It was found to have mistakenly included a non-guaranteed bonus in its calculation of salaries, which previously stood at £9.06 per hour.

Just 60 per cent of wardens were reaching ticketing-based targets required for the bonus, according to union representatives.

Workers, represented by union Unite, previously went on strike for two days over the same issue in August.

Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said he hoped to agree the final salary terms in the coming weeks through talks mediated by conciliation service Acas.

He said: “The employers have agreed to pay the London living wage, with backdating being considered.

“The management has agreed to negotiate with Unite over a company sick pay scheme. We have agreed to do this under the auspices of the conciliation service, Acas."

Councillor Feryal Demirci, Hackney Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods said: “We had been informed by our contractors and Unite the union that this week’s planned strike had been called off.

"We had already agreed to pay the London Living Wage to staff of our contractors and will continue our ongoing dialogue with APCOA.”
