A man has died after flames ripped through a house in east London on Christmas Day morning.

The man’s body was found on the ground floor after firefighters with oxygen masks entered the house in Field Road, Forest Gate.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people managed to escape before the London Fire Brigade arrived.

Flames erupted shortly before 4.45am and four fire crews battled for about two-and-a-half hours before they were under control.

A brigade spokesman said: "The fire badly damaged the two storey terraced property and crews wearing breathing apparatus found the body of a man on the ground floor.

"Sadly he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Fire investigators are now probing the cause of the blaze.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said it was being treated as “unexplained” and officers were working to inform the man’s relatives.
