A Palestinian flag has been spotted flying above a Barclays Bank in Brixton as the crisis in the Middle East continues.

The flag, which appeared on the roof of a privately owned building above the bank near Brixton station, is one of several to be erected across the capital to show support for civilians facing daily air strikes in Gaza.

Twitter user Matthew Kiziltan shared a picture of it today.

The latest ceasefire in the conflict is due to finish at 9pm (GMT) tonight.

Since it went into effect Sunday, Israel has halted military operations in the coastal territory and Hamas militants have stopped firing rockets.

Today, a member of the Palestinian delegation at truce talks in Cairo said negotiators are considering an Egyptian proposal tabled yesterday.

The proposal calls for easing parts of the Israeli blockade of Gaza, bringing relief to the territory. But it leaves the most contentious issues - including a full lifting of the closures - for later talks.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman defended the decision to fly the flag after being criticised by Jewish leaders, saying; "Sometimes politicians need to take a stand in the face of injustice and needless suffering and that is what I am doing."
