Ambulance workers were called to give medical assistance to eight people who were "spaced out" after eating hash brownies in south London.

Paramedics were called to the house in Purley, Croydon at about 7.30pm last night to treat eight people who were reported to be unwell.

They took five of the group, who had been eating marijuana-laced cakes, to hospital for further treatment.

Two ambulance crews, a London Ambulance Service (LAS) hazardous area response team and police were all sent to investigate the incident.

Chris Hawkswell, an emergency, planning and resilience officer for the LAS, wrote on Twitter: "Purley: we are assessing the 8 people, turns out they are a little spaced out and feeling the effects of eating hash brownies.

"Five of the patients eaten Hash Brownies are going to hospital for observation. 2 Ambs, Duty Officer, @LAS_HART & police attended."

Twitter users subsequently suggested the doped up group had wasted ambulance workers' time.

Olivia Cook said: "What a huge waste of resource. You guys have patience of saints."

Caroline Axten tweeted: "You could all be saving lives & instead have to look after a bunch of stoners! God bless you guys."

Caroline Carr posted: "Hope there wasn't a real emergency elsewhere. They should now donate whether it be time or financially."

An LAS spokeswoman would not confirm the precise location of house and Scotland Yard was unable to say if there had been any arrests.
