Parents ‘told to shut up’ in special needs travel meeting

“Furious”: Ben Mayers with eight-year-old son Jonah, who has a serious brain injury

Parents of children with special educational needs were left furious after a councillor told a campaigner to “shut up” in a council meeting.

Families attended amid concerns about a new school transport service. Tim Ahern, chief whip at Conservative-run Kensington and Chelsea, was told by Frank Redmond at Thursday’s debate he “hasn’t got a clue” what families were going through.

He told Mr Redmond: “Shut up, you’re not elected.”

Ben Mayers, 45, whose son Jonah has a serious brain injury, said: “We were furious.” Mr Redmond, 63, from support group Full of Life, said it was “upsetting”.

The council admitted the scheme, set up in April, had initial problems.

A spokesman said on Cllr Ahern’s behalf: “His comment was clearly to a single individual interrupting and heckling.”

Healthcare and Transport Services, who run the service, said: “We acknowledge there were teething problems. These have been addressed. Staff are clearly informed of the needs of each person they transport.”
