Residents of a London borough are set to enjoy free parking this weekend due to a planned strike by 100 traffic wardens.

Members of the GMB union are threatening a walkout tomorrow and Saturday due to a pay dispute with contractor Mouchel which provides parking services in Wandsworth.

Kieron Merrett, GMB Organiser, said “If last ditch talks fail, Wandsworth’s yellow lines and restricted parking bays could be left free for all during a two day strike.”

Sadiq Khan, Labour MP for Tooting and Shadow London Minister, said “Companies like Mouchel should be paying enough so that people don’t have to work two jobs, and it should be paying enough to keep families out of poverty. Wages have completely failed to keep pace with the cost-of living in London.”

A Wandsworth council spokesman said: “This is an internal dispute between our parking contractor Mouchel and its employees. We have a contract with Mouchel and we fully expect the terms of that contract to be fulfilled.”
