Parts of west London were plunged into darkness this evening after a powercut left hundreds without any electricity.

People living in Barons Court, Fulham and West Kensington were affected by the power failure since 8pm this evening.

A message tweeted by UK Power Networks said: “We are aware of a powercut affecting the #SW6 and #W14 postcode areas. Engineers are on the way and we currently estimate 10pm for a fix.”

Barons Court and West Kensington London Underground stations were temporarily closed. A Transport for London spokeswoman said emergency lighting has been activated and services have since returned to normal.

Many took to social media websites to complain of being left in darkness and unable to cook, while others made hilarious jokes.

Account manager Jack Layer wrote on Twitter: “Powercut in Fulham. I’m very concerned that the Gressingham duck I bought may defrost. Emergency confit may be needed.”

Ben Wiltshire tweeted: “46 minutes into the #fulham #powercut and things are desperate, there’s quinoa all over the floor and no-one can find the maid to clean it up!”

Journalist Guy Adams wrote: “There is a power cut here in Fulham. We are cooking fettuccini by the light of some scented candles.”

Another Twitter user posted an image of a glass of wine and candles with the message “surviving the powercut in true SW style”, as others tweeted images of their dark rooms.

A spokesman for the UK Power Networks said: "UK Power Networks would like to apologise to several thousand customers in the Fulham Palace Road area who were affected by a power cut this evening.

"A fault on the high-voltage underground electricity network occurred at 7.48pm. The cause is being investigated but our engineers worked as quickly and as safely as possible on rerouting supplies via other cables. The final supplies were restored at 10.20pm.
