Long-serving prime-time host Zane Lowe is leaving BBC Radio 1 to work for tech giant Apple.

The DJ, who joined the network in 2003, will host his last show on March 5.

He said: “I want to thank everyone at Radio 1 - for their support and friendship.

"The station has allowed me to share incredible music with the country's best music fans - I've loved every minute of it. Exciting times lie ahead.”

Musicians and fellow DJs took to Twitter pay tribute to the broadcaster, who hosts Radio 1's new music show between 7pm-9pm Monday-Thursday.

Greg James tweeted: "Ohhhhh @zanelowe going to miss you big guy. Massive congrats to @AnnieMac - looking forward to seeing you 5 days a week!"

Rapper Example wrote: "Fair well [sic] @BBCR1's departing @zanelowe. He first played my records back in 2005! World class broadcaster, good friend, terrible impersonator."

Singer-songwriter Saint Raymond said: "Gutted to see @zanelowe is leaving.. Been a legend to me and some many artists. Gave me my first ever @BBCR1 play. Thanks man x"

Annie Mac, who hosts Radio 1's flagship dance show on Friday evenings, is set to replace him. She said: “I am so excited and humbled to be asked to do this show.

"To be following in the footsteps of Zane Lowe, a broadcaster that I respect and admire enormously, is a huge honour. I can’t wait to get started.”
