Residents of four inner London boroughs have been rated among the most miserable people in Britain in the Government’s latest “happiness index”.

Lambeth, Hackney, Islington and Camden recorded among the lowest ratings for “positive” feelings such as happiness and life satisfaction and some of the worst scores for the “negative” measure of anxiety.

The Office for National Statistics has been compiling the data since 2012 after former prime minister David Cameron called for a measure of wellbeing in Britain that was not based solely on economic output.

The findings for the year to March 2019 found that London is still the least happy region in the country although it has seen the biggest improvement since 2013.

The average life satisfaction measure in London was 7.58 out of 10 compared with a national average of 7.71.
