Several streets were flooded in Chiswick after a water main burst in the West London district on Thursday morning.

Three fire engines were sent to roads from Turnham Green Terrace to Emlin Road from around 8.45am with pedestrians and cars wading through the water.

The pipe itself burst in Bath Road and Thames Water engineers were seen on foot at the site. Bath Road was closed in both directions for several hours between The Avenue and Emlyn Road.

“Crews worked with partners to protect homes and businesses using sandbags and diverting flood water,” a statement from London Fire Brigade read.

Crews from Hammersmith and Chiswick fire stations attended the scene and the incident was brought under control by 1pm.

Video taken by Chiswick residents showed the water was deep in places and that cars were turning around to avoid the spilling.

On Twitter Marijn van de Geer wrote: “London Fire Brigade [are] absolute legends [and] arrived around five minutes after I rang the #EmergencyServices. Thank you! Hope they can help!”

Buses 94 and 272 were diverted.

A Thames Water spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for the disruption caused by a burst water main on the Bath Road in Chiswick this morning. Our engineers were quickly on the scene and shut in the water main to stop the flow of water. We’ve rerouted water around our network to keep customers in supply as we continue to fix the pipe.”
