The body of Salvador Dali’s great nephew was found by his girlfriend after he took a drugs overdose, a coroner has ruled.
Slim Dali, 49, a descendant of the Spanish surrealist, died of liver cirrhosis and an overdose of methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth.
The musician and painter was found in his bedroom in Kentish Town surrounded by drug paraphernalia, Poplar coroner’s court heard on Friday.
Assistant coroner Dr William Dolman recorded the death as drugs related but said hepatitis B also played a role in the incident on October 23 last year.
Slim, who abused drugs and had HIV, was the son of award-winning French actress Stéphane Audran.
He was born in Tunisia in 1966, and he lived for 20 years on the Athlone House estate. One neighbour, Celine La Freniere, paid tribute to him on local website kentishtowner.co.uk.
She wrote: “Slim has been a rising star both as a jazz singer and painter. Slim was very much part of the history of this community, its fights and successes.
“Slim loved belonging to this community, even though his strange appearance often got local residents looking at him askance. He didn’t mind, however. He even sympathised with those who saw him that way.”
She recalled how Slim had helped her after she got lost shortly before his death. She wrote: “Just like some angel of mercy, he took me by the hand and walked me confidently through various back roads to my destination.
“‘Today you did a good deed. You will go to heaven you know,’ I joked. Little did we know then how quickly this was to happen.”
