Shocking moment pedestrian is killed by speeding driver as he crosses road in Deptford

A pedestrian was flung into the air and killed by a speeding driver as he crossed a main road in south-east London.

Paul Weidlich, 54, a TfL worker, was thrown into the air by a high-powered Volkswagen Golf driven by John Mulligan at more than 20mph above the speed limit in Deptford.

Police released CCTV footage of the horror crash after Mulligan, 33, from New Cross, was on Thursday jailed for four years.

He was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving on September 22 at Woolwich Crown Court.

The trial heard Mulligan ploughed into Mr Weidlich, of Greenwich, at more than 52mph on the 30mph Creek Road on June 4 last year.

The footage shows his Golf TSI-R speeding away from traffic lights alongside a BMW, the driver of which has never been traced, before pulling ahead and switching lanes.

Mulligan's view of the road was impaired by an incline of the bridge over Deptford Creek as he crashed into Mr Weidlich, who was taken to hospital but could not be saved.

He stopped at the scene and was arrested.

Mulligan pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of causing death by careless driving at the start of his trial but this was rejected by prosecutors.

He was disqualified from driving for six years and will be required to pass an extended re-test before he can return to the roads.
