Soho House looks to old BBC HQ at White City for new club

The move paves the way for a huge overhaul of the 17-acre White City
22 October 2013

Soho House is in talks to open a branch in White City with a new members’ club on the site of the old BBC Television Centre.

Entrepreneur Nick Jones is reportedly negotiating with property developer Stanhope for a boutique hotel and club with a rooftop swimming pool at the west London site. The original Soho House opened in Greek Street in 1995 followed by Shoreditch House and offshoots in New York, Berlin and Miami. Annual membership in London costs £600.

Soho House would operate a 50-room boutique hotel in the inner ring and the crescent-shaped outer ring would become a mansion-style apartment block.

The BBC sold the five-hectare site to Stanhope, which is backed by Japanese and Canadian investment companies, for £200 million. It plans to turn the Television Centre site into homes, offices, retail and leisure space. While journalists, production and support staff left, the BBC’s commercial arm will return next year to occupy a 100,000 sq ft building across the road. BBC Studios and Post Production will return in 2015.

The Stanhope scheme has yet to receive planning permission from Hammersmith & Fulham council and is expected to take five years to deliver. Soho House has 11 clubs, including West Hollywood and Berlin and its 18-acre Babington House in Somerset.

Stanhope is understood to have “pitched” the idea to Soho House.A Soho House spokeswoman said it had not made a decision on whether to explore the site further.
