Special report: Plans for £4.2bn London 'super sewer' to clean up River Thames

Outdated: the existing system struggles to cope with high volumes of rainfall

London's sewer system could be set for a huge £4.2billion overhaul to stop sewage seeping into the Thames.

Plans for a 'super sewer' have been met with opposition from campaigners - and could add up to £80 per year onto water bills.

The 15 mile route would stretch through 11 boroughs from Acton in west London to Abbey Mills in east London - and work could begin as soon as 2016.
