The dessert Spotted Dick has been renamed Spotted Richard by waiters in the House of Commons restaurant, prompting amusement among MPs.

Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley and Outwood, was eating at the Strangers' Dining Room when the waiter offered the classic suet pudding using the alternative name.

Taken aback, Ms Jenkyns tweeted: "Just had a working lunch in the Strangers dining room in Parliament. And got told that the dessert special was a 'Spotted Richard.'"

She added the hashtag: "#PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad".

Four waiters confirmed they were using the new name to refer to the classic dessert, according to the Telegraph, seemingly to save guests' embarrassment.

Politicians and the public reacted with lighthearted outrage. Conservative MP Michael Fabricant wrote on Twitter: "Call a dick a dick, I say!"

One man wrote: "What have we become?!" while another complained: "Sensitive lot there... or just PC?"

Another person however pointed out the waiters were not the first to rename the pudding, writing: "This is not new, this wonderful pudd has been called Spotted Richard as an alternative for decades."

A council canteen in Flintshire renamed the pudding back in 2009 after "immature comments", according to the BBC.

A House of Commons spokeswoman however denied that the name change was an official one.

She said: “Spotted dick is one of the many traditional hot puddings we serve in our outlets, and there are no changes to the way it is referred to on menus.”
