Londoners are preparing to celebrate St George’s Day with a series of events in tribute to the patron saint.
St George’s Day is celebrated on April 23 and is the National Day for England, although it is not an official national holiday.
Legend has it that St George killed a dragon which was causing havoc in a town.
It is celebrated by several Christian churches and by various nations, kingdoms and countries where the dragon slayer is the patron saint.
To mark the day a 15 foot high statue of St George was unveiled at Wellington Arch this morning.
It will go on a tour of the UK to celebrate the day and will open jousting tournaments at historic sites.
The capital will host the Feast of St George in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, which has been inspired by St George and the national day of feasting.
The line-up includes an English farmer’s market with stalls selling hog roast, homemade pies and cakes.
There will also be live demos from top chefs who will be preparing English dinners from past and present.
Luxury food retailer Fortnum and Mason have launched a patriotic menu which will only be available today.
Dishes include Royal Windsor Beef, Yorkshire puddings, King Edward potatoes and sparkling wine from High Grove.
Youngsters can learn all about St George at the Museum of Childhood.
A series of arts and crafts activities, live performances and other educational activities will be on offer to visitors today.
