Mysterious black sculptures of what appeared to be rats dressed as bankers have popped up in the City of London.
The large sculptures, which left City workers scratching their heads, have been temporarily housed in Leadenhall Street as part of the City of London's Scuplture in the City.
Installed earlier this month, Business Insider reported the statues were intended to be rats and questioned what their meaning was.
But the two tall, black animal sculptures have been revealed to be imitations of cats.
Cats I and II are from artist Laura Ford's latest exhibition, Days of Judgement.
The statues are said to be influenced by medieval sources similar to the inspiration behind Horace Walpole's gothic castle Strawberry Hill House in south-west London.
The Guardian reported the sculpture of the two cats, which have their heads facing down, are made of black bronze and are "locked in introspective grief" to "recall the agony of Masaccio’s Adam and Eve expelled from paradise".
The public art exhibition in and around the Square Mile also hosts works from Damien Hurst, Ekkehard Altenburger and Adam Chodzko.
The City of London said the exhibition aimed to enhance the urban environment with "cutting-edge contemporary works from leading artists" in busy thoroughfares and green spaces.
Ford's work is also be displayed at Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham, until November 6.
