An east London teenager said she was left horrified after finding a four-centimetre maggot buried inside her corn on the cob.

Sixth form student Lauren Conway, from Ilford, was eating a dinner of chicken, jacket potato and vegetables when she claims the found the disgusting insect.

Miss Conway, who wears a retainer on her teeth, was cutting the kernels off of the cob when she made the shocking discovery.

“My mum made me dinner, I’d eaten some of it,” Miss Conway told the Standard.

“I have a metal retainer behind my top teeth so I cut the corn off the corn on the cobs. I have to cut it off, I can’t bite it.

“I cut a bit off and the corn and the maggot fell off onto the plate.

“There was a clear line where it had been in there, a maggot shaped hole inside the corn where it has been hiding.”

The pack of frozen corn on the cobs were bought at Sainsbury’s, at either the Newbury Park or Barkingside stores.

The 17-year-old student, who is studying in Barkingside, said she was “disgusted” at the supermarket and has been put off corn on the cobs and frozen vegetables for life.

“I just couldn’t believe it that they would let it happen,” she said.

“You think it would go through checks, the proper pesticides they put on it to stop that stuff going in.”

She added: “It’s not something minor. It wasn’t the date being out of date, it’s serious - finding a pest in you food.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Our supplier has stringent processes in place and unpleasant finds like this are extremely rare. We’d like to apologise to Lauren for her experience.”
