Mikey Connors was killed when a car crashed into a horse and cart he was racing on a dual carriageway, according to witnesses

A father was killed when a car crashed into the horse and cart he was racing on a dual carriageway, witnesses said.

Mikey Connors, 32, below, died after the incident in Thamesmead on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a man aged 30, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Connors’s family revealed he had been racing his horse Big T. Simey Connors, the victim’s brother, wrote on Facebook: “My heart is in bits over you ... I saw you lying on the ground I ran over and got on my knees to beg Jesus and Mary for you to be OK.”

Friend Danny Cassius-Connor told the Standard: “He was a talented boxer and singer, but his passion was horses. You couldn’t meet a better father or family man.”

Competitive road racing, or trotting, is a popular pastime for the travelling community.
