Thousands of people across east London have woken up to find no running water in their homes today after Thames Water reported an outage is in place, which has resulted in several schools shutting their doors.

Angry residents complained on Twitter leading the water firm to issue a notice to customers in more than a dozen postcodes including Hackney, Whitechapel, Stratford and Bethnal Green just after 7am to inform them services had been disrupted.

They said: "We're sorry to customers in the following postal code areas who are experiencing no water or low water pressure.

"This is due to a power outage at a site local to you, our engineers are on route and your suplly will return to normal as soon as possible."

The fault was reported at a water booster site in Finsbury Park at 6.15am.

In Tower Hamlets, a council spokesman confirmed 10 schools had closed while journalist Paul Rhodes added his son's primary school, Smithy Street, in Stepney was also shut.

Katy Beale posted: "Will schools be open if there's no water? #e9 #water #hackney."

While Andy Leary-May added: "No water in Hackney this morning. Enough in the kettle for a cup of tea, thank god. #smellymonday @thameswater?"

Thames Water said power had now been restored to the site but admitted it would take a "while" before the water returned due to the scale of the outage.

A spokeswoman said: "A power cut at a water booster site earlier this morning meant some customers have had no water or low pressure. We’re sorry for this inconvenience and have now restarted the boosters so water is being pumped through the network of pipes again and supplies are beginning to return to normal.”
