Commuters tonight told of rush hour mayhem at Waterloo station after a signalling fault sparked huge delays for travellers.

Frustrated South West Train passengers spoke of chaos as signal problems at Wimbledon meant lines into Waterloo were blocked.

Some took to Twitter to say there was a huge scramble to get on trains that were leaving the platforms while others blasted bosses for a lack of communication at the station.

Jessica Murphy tweeted: “trains are apparently expected to be busy! There are so many people on the train from Waterloo there isn't a chance of getting on

While Greg Sanders posted: “cocked up Wmbldn. Again. Always. Delays for hours. Yet still charging fares at Waterloo gates. Where is refund for bad service (sic)?”

Another user added: “communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Hundreds of people at Waterloo yet your staff are saying NOTHING!”

And another man stranded at the station said: “Waterloo has 18 platforms. Currently only 1 has a train on it. At rush hour. Completely inexcusable.”

South West Trains said the fault at Wimbledon meant two lines into Waterloo were blocked but added services were starting to run between the stations.

National Rail said the disruption was likely to remain until the end of service.
