A woman cyclist has died in hospital days after she was hit by a lorry at a notorious junction in London.

The 26-year-old had spent the weekend fighting for her life after being crushed underneath a lorry at Ludgate Circus in the City on Friday morning.

A spokeswoman for City of London police said: "She was taken to the Royal London Hospital and sadly died this morning."

There have been no arrests, according to police.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.30 on Friday morning after reports of a collision between a lorry and a cyclist.

The woman was found in cardiac arrest at the scene, where her mangled bike lay in the road behind the wheels of the truck.

The lorry appeared to have been turning left onto Ludgate Hill from Farringdon Street when the collision happened.

Witnesses said the rider was "crushed" under a large tipper truck at the junction, where 32-year-old Spaniard Victor Manuel Ben Rodriguez died after being hit by a lorry on the way to a job interview earlier this year.

One said: "We were stuck in traffic and the accident looked to have just happened.

"The lady was under the truck with her head and upper body visible and I'm sorry to say it looked like her leg was crushed under the wheel but it may just have been hidden behind it."

The junction is on the route of a proposed north-south cycle highway between Elephant and Castle and King's Cross.
