A woman has died after being found “on fire” in an east London garden.

Police and fire crews rushed to a home in Chadwell Heath, near Romford, late last night following reports of “a person alight”.

The fire was extinguished but the victim, in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The London Fire Brigade said two fire engines and around ten firefighters were called to the property on Lee Avenue just before midnight on Thursday evening.

The Brigade said in a statement: “We were called at 11.52pm on Thursday evening and the incident was over for firefighters at 12.28am. Crews from Dagenham fire station attended the scene.

“Sadly a woman was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police and the Brigade’s fire investigation team.”

Met police said the death was being treated as “unexplained” and that enquiries into the cause of the fire were ongoing.

Officers remain at the scene and police are working to inform the woman’s next of kin.
