Woman dies in fire at south London block of flats

A woman has died after a fire broke out at a block of flats in south London.

Four fire engines and an ambulance were called to the building in Pampisford Road, South Croydon, at 10.20am this morning.

The woman's body was found inside a badly damaged flat on the second floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Another woman in a different flat was escorted to safety by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus. She was treated for shock at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.

Around 21 firefighters brought the fire under control by 11.22am.

An LAS spokesman said: “We sent an ambulance crew, a duty officer and our Hazardous Area Response team to the scene. Sadly a woman died at the scene.”
