A hunt has been launched for a 35-year-old man after a woman was repeatedly stabbed in the back during a daylight attack in Woolwich.

Police and paramedics were called to reports of a stabbing in Anglesea Road at around 9.30am on Monday.

A woman, believed to be in her 30s, was found suffering "a number of stab wounds to her back" at the scene, police said.

She was rushed to a major trauma centre by London's Air Ambulance and police were awaiting updates on her condition, although it is not thought to be life-threatening.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We sent an incident response officer, a single responder in a car and an ambulance crew to the scene. We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance.

"We treated a person at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre by air."

Police later released a picture of a man wanted for questioning in connection with the attack.

A spokesman for the force said Peter Morley should "not be approached by members of the public" and anyone who sees Morley or knows where he is should "dial 999 immediately".

Pictures taken at the scene show a cordon in place while officers investigated the stabbing, thought to have been a domestic incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Lesley Hamilton of Greenwich Police added: "It is important that we locate Mr Morley quickly and without further incident and I urge anyone who sees him not to hesitate but to call police without delay.

"Officers remain at the scene and additional patrols are being conducted to provide reassurance to the public while the search for Peter Morley is undertaken."

There have been no arrests and an investigation into the stabbing continued as the road remained closed on Monday.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Information can be reported to Greenwich CID on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
